Firstly, I believe the intention of the judges convicting the offenders are not to keep them out of the stores, rather to punish them in such a way that their social activities are limited - very effective in my opinion.

Secondly, shoplifters all start their "trade" as most of start of in our careers. They first start with the smaller items, and at times that stores are not so busy, they think they will get away easier that way. They then progress their "careers" to items of more value, and become more daring when realizing that they can blend better with bigger crowds such as peak times for stores, they also think that they will blend in crowds when having to escape.

As Mark stated, they have a job like you and I.

This is some good information. I think companies should reward associates in their companies for reporting shoplifting that results in an apprehension. I tell associates that anyone who calls me with a hot tip and results in a catch that I will buy them lunch. Of course that comes out of my own pocket but I feel its worth it. I have rarely had a customer report shoplifting to me or my staff. Also we open ourselves up scrutiny customers who are more aware of shoplifting may not like to shop our stores if they think its a big problem. Thanks for your time in preparing this information lots to think about.

I still can't figure out what she did wrong. She didn't go up and tackle the guy or hit him over the head. She approached him and politely asked for his receipt so she could remove the security tags from the merchandise. He assualted her. All she did was speak to him. Is it really Walmart policy to not even approach a suspected thief? I work in retail and would not directly confront a thief. Policy is, give them what they want and get them out of the store. But if I asked a customer if they had a receipt for something they were carrying, and the person hit me or kicked me, I would not get fired.

Since when do you discipline someone who saved you $600? What part of Thank You missed the conversation? And exactly what did she do wrong? I had a flipping Wal-mart store greeting literally check off every item on my receipt because the one gallon water bottles weren't in plastic bags. After the assualt, I went to the customer service counter and returned every item explaining in full detail why. I refuse to go back to that particular store. I did NOT set off any alarms either. All I had was groceries. I applaud the woman who asked for a receipt. To get assaulted in the line of duty then get fired.......makes me pray for grocery stores of days gone by to return.
